Phentermine Frequently Asked Questions

Does phentermine work? Yes. Studies have shown that individuals are able to lose weight and maintain their weight loss more effectively with prescription medications than with only a change in activity, diet and behavior alone.

How does phentermine work? The main action of phentermine is to reduce your appetite. Therefore you eat less and make healthier food choices.

Is phentermine safe? Yes. Phentermine has been around for over 50 years without problems when taken as prescribed. Also, phentermine is approved by the Food & Drug Administration (FDA) for both safety and efficacy.

Does phentermine cause heart valve damage or primary pulmonary hypertension? No. There are no cases or studies of heart valve disease in patients taking phentermine alone.

Does phentermine raise your blood pressure? Some forms of phentermine can raise your blood pressure. I prescribe the slow release form of phentermine and have never seen it raise anyone's blood pressure, even those who are controlled on blood pressure medication.

Is phentermine addictive? No. Phentermine is not an amphetamine and I have never seen any evidence that they are addictive, either in my experience or in the experience from other colleagues who specialize in weight loss. Also, phentermine, unfortunately, loses its effectiveness the longer you take it, thereby lowering its addictive potential.

What happens if phentermine stops working? Phentermine may be increased to higher doses than normally recommended in the prescribing information. This is in agreement with guidelines from the American Bariatric Society of Physicians (weight loss specialists).

Can I get phentermine if my Body Mass Index is less than 30%?  Yes. Studies have shown that you are at increased risk for diseases if your Body Mass Index is over 22%. This is in agreement with guidelines from the American Bariatric Society of Physicians (weight loss specialists).

How long can I take phentermine? You can take phentermine for as long as you want to, for weight loss and/or weight maintenance. This is in agreement with guidelines from the American Bariatric Society of Physicians (weight loss specialists).

Can I take phentermine if I take antidepressants? Yes. I have not seen any problems with clients taking theses medications together. Although some literature states combining phentermine and antidepressants may cause serotonin syndrome, the condition is mild in most persons and resolve in less than 24 hours.

Will my insurance coverage the prescription for phentermine?  Most insurance will not pay for phentermine. The cost of phentermine ranges from $85-$105 for one month's prescription.
